‘Do your own research': affordance activation and disinformation spread

Affordances are the perception of what a technical artifact can do. They bridge technically-determinist perspective with social constructivist theory, acknowledging material aspects technology while allowing for user agency. Yet most affordance theory separates out engagement process into producers and consumers. On one hand, this lens is essential because it considers how an end interprets, engages, utilizes through their structure. It highlights both constrained enabled by creator, but also documents such might differ from creator’s intention(s) completely. other framework doesn’t consider interactional dimensions affordances theory. This paper fills gap, relying on sociotechnical to analyze three case studies across different platforms (Twitter, Google Scholar, Yandex). In doing so, we explain pundits, propagandists, conspiracy theorists ‘activate affordances’ validate claims. When audiences primed ‘do own research,’ disinformation becomes more entangled, participatory process.
